Questions about private telehealth

A few of the questions we hear most often. The full list is on our FAQ page.

How much does a consultation cost?

A standard consultation is $39.99 for 15 minutes. Payment is made online before the consultation.

Is Medicare billed?

No. ASAR Health offers this consultation as a private service and does not submit a Medicare claim for it.

Can I get a prescription?

Medication may be prescribed when clinically appropriate. Prescribing decisions are made by the doctor following clinical assessment, and some medications may not be suitable for telehealth prescribing.

Can every medical problem be managed online?

No. Some conditions need a physical examination, testing or urgent assessment. If telehealth is not clinically appropriate, you may be advised to attend an appropriate in-person medical service.

Before your consultation

Telehealth suitability

Not every condition can be appropriately assessed by video. The doctor may recommend a face-to-face assessment where necessary.

Consultations use an appropriate secure telehealth platform. Please review our Privacy Policy before booking.

Prescribing

Prescriptions are provided only when clinically appropriate. A consultation does not automatically result in a prescription or medical certificate.

Payment is made online before your consultation. The fee is a private fee, and no Medicare claim is submitted.

  3. 3

    Have your consultation

Join your secure video consultation at the scheduled time. Your GP will talk with you about your concerns, assess whether telehealth is clinically appropriate, and discuss the next steps with you.

  4. 4

Receive your care plan and receipt

Following your consultation, your GP will discuss the assessment and appropriate next steps. An itemised receipt is provided so you have a record for yourself or your insurer.

What happens if telehealth isn't right for you?

Telehealth is convenient, but it can't replace every kind of medical care.

Some medical conditions and circumstances require a face-to-face assessment. If your GP decides that a video consultation is not clinically appropriate, you will be advised to seek an appropriate in-person medical service.

Where a physical examination, procedure, testing or urgent assessment is needed, your GP will explain this and help you work out where to go next.

Emergencies. Telehealth is not an emergency medical service. If you have severe symptoms or believe you may have a medical emergency, call 000 or go to your nearest emergency department. If you need urgent attention, contact your usual GP, an urgent care service or another appropriate healthcare service.

Telehealth across Australia

What can be discussed?

A telehealth consultation may be appropriate for a range of general practice concerns, depending on your individual circumstances.

  • New or ongoing concerns

Talk through new symptoms or health concerns, or review how an ongoing issue is going.

  • Existing health conditions

Discuss conditions you already have and whether any change in plan is needed.

  • Medications

Ask questions about your medications and whether treatment may be appropriate.

  • Results and investigations

Discuss test or investigation results where appropriate.

  • Referrals

Talk about whether a referral to another healthcare provider could help.

  • Preventive health

Get preventive health advice and discuss general health concerns.

The suitability of telehealth depends on the nature of your concern and the information needed to assess it.

Prescriptions, certificates and referrals

Each is a clinical decision made by your GP, not an automatic part of booking.

Prescriptions and medication

Where clinically appropriate, your GP may prescribe medication after a telehealth consultation. A prescription is not guaranteed. The decision depends on your medical history, current circumstances, clinical assessment and applicable requirements. Some medications may require a face-to-face assessment or may not be appropriate to prescribe by telehealth.

Medical certificates

Where clinically appropriate, a GP may provide a medical certificate following a consultation. A certificate is not automatically provided simply because a consultation is booked. The GP must make an appropriate clinical assessment.

Referrals

Where clinically appropriate, your GP may provide a referral or recommend further medical assessment. Some referrals or investigations may require an in-person assessment.

When telehealth may not be appropriate

A face-to-face assessment may be needed when your condition requires:

  • A physical examination
  • Observations or measurements that cannot be obtained remotely
  • A procedure
  • Urgent assessment
  • Diagnostic testing
  • Another form of in-person medical care

If telehealth is not appropriate, you will be advised to seek an appropriate healthcare service.

Emergency care. Telehealth is not an emergency medical service. If you have severe symptoms or believe you may have a medical emergency, call 000 or attend your nearest emergency department.
